Ex-bishop escapes prosecution in abuse case

Springfield, Massachusetts - The former Roman Catholic bishop here will escape trial on child sexual abuse charges because the crimes are too old to prosecute, the district attorney said today.

Former bishop Thomas L. Dupre became the first Roman Catholic bishop nationwide to be charged with sexual abuse in an indictment made public today. But Hampden County District Attorney William M. Bennett said the statute of limitations would prevent him from prosecuting Dupre on indictments charging him with two counts of child rape.
