$1.8 Million Awarded To Priest Abuse Victim

Davenport, Iowa-

A de-frocked Roman Catholic priest must pay $1.8 million to a man he's accused of sexually abusing nearly 50 years ago.

The man says James Janssen molested him over a period of several years in the 1950s and 60s, and that church officials kept it secret for decades. In testimony last week, Janssen admitted to the abuse then recanted that testimony the next day.

Janssen was assigned to several eastern Iowa parishes during his time as a priest and is accused of abusing boys throughout his career. The same man who filed this lawsuit was also part of a larger $9 million settlement with the Davenport diocese that cleared them of any future liability.
