Estimate: Roman Catholic church has spent over a billion dollars on legal cases
It appears the cost of the clergy-sex abuse scandal has topped the one (b) billion dollar mark for the Roman Catholic Church. That's according to a tally by a group of bishops and a review of known settlements by The Associated Press.
The financial milestone was reached with last week's 120 (m) million dollar settlement announced by the Diocese of Covington, Kentucky.
One church lawyer who's helping sex abuse victims says he warned bishops two decades ago that abuse costs would top the (b) billion dollar mark. The Reverend Thomas Doyle says, back then, "nobody believed us." He says one archbishop even told him that no one would ever sue the Catholic church.
