89 claims filed against Tucson diocese
At least 89 people are trying to collect money from the Catholic Diocese of Tucson for alleged child sexual abuse by priests or other church workers.
Friday at 4:00 p.m.was the deadline for victims to file financial claims with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
Bishop Gerald Kicanas calls the deadline a significant step in the diocese's bankruptcy reorganization process. Attorney Lynne Cadigan, who filed claims for 30 clients, agrees.
Cadigan explains, "It's hard (for the diocese) to determine how much money to get until you know how many claims you have."
Now that the diocese knows, Cadigan says, "The process now is for the court to determine which of these claims that have been filed can actually receive money and are legally viable claims."
