Former Bellingham Priest Pleads Guilty In Sex Abuse Case
A retired Catholic priest accused of sexually abusing 18 altar boys at a Bellingham church pleaded guilty Wednesday to 32 assault and battery charges in Worcester Superior Court.
The Rev. Paul Desilets was sentenced to serve up to 18 months in prison. Desilets, 81, suffers from diabetes and illness caused by childhood polio.
He was indicted in April 2002 on charges of molesting 18 altar boys between 1978 and 1984 at Our Lady of Assumption Parish in Bellingham. The parish has since been closed as part of a reconfiguration of the Boston Archdiocese.
Desilets had been living in Canada since 1984. He was arrested there in October 2002 at the request of U.S. authorities. He was returned to Massachusetts in April.
