Four men with Delco ties dismissed from priesthood

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania --

Seven Catholic priests, four of whom served in Delaware County parishes, have been dismissed from the priesthood by the Vatican in connection with sexual misconduct, according to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Four of them were defrocked or, according to notification received by Philadelphia Cardinal Justin Rigali from the Vatican, "dismissed from the clerical state by the Holy Father in response to a finding of misconduct involving minors."

Among them is Thomas J. Durkin, who served at Holy Saviour Church in Lower Chichester, Holy Spirit Church in Sharon Hill and two parishes in Bucks and Philadelphia counties between June 1964 and March 1968.

Three of them, all of whom served in Delaware County parishes, were laicized or granted requests to be removed from the priesthood "in response to a credible accusation of misconduct involving a minor", said archdiocesan officials.

Among them is Richard G. Jones, who functioned as an archdiocesan priest from June 1963 until October 1988, when he was removed from active ministry.
