Church Abuse Settlement Heads To Court
The agreement that ended a criminal investigation into New Hampshire's Roman Catholic diocese called for annual audits to evaluate the diocese's child protection policies. But discord over the scope of the audit and who will pay for it has grown so great that the agreement could be voided.
Both sides will be in court this week arguing that the deal can be saved.
If they fail, the state could find itself litigating an onerous case with little guarantee of success, and the diocese could earn the distinction of being the first in the nation to face criminal charges stemming from the child sex abuse scandal.
