Column: Pope did not solve church's abuse problem
By now you've probably heard that the pope is dead. Of course you have, everyone has.
And to make matters worse he's not even going to be put in the ground until Friday; so all you fine people at home can catch every last second of media coverage from the pope receiving embalming fluids to the pope's funeral. That is, on top of all the coverage we saw last week of the pope actually dying.
Personally, I'm surprised that the Vatican didn't have it on pay-per-view.
At any rate the man is dead, which leaves us to ponder the value of his reign as the ultimate authority in the Catholic Church.
Throughout the pope's reign, people championed him as an advocate for human rights and as an enemy of communism, especially in his native Poland. Millions of people followed him everywhere he went and adored him for his policies.
Despite his considerable upside, his unwillingness to do anything about the child molesting problems that have been plaguing the church in recent years that sticks out in my mind. That is to say, the problems that permeates in every cavernous hallway of probably every Catholic Church anywhere in the world, at any given point in history - clerical figures inapporpriatelly touching children.
